Some Resolutions

I love New Years and have for as long as I can remember. I get teary-eyed watching the ball drop in Times Square, thinking about the year that has passed. I used to think about how I could never get that year back, out of fear of getting older and watching time slip by. I’m only 21 so I am not entirely sure why this is at the forefront of my mind, but it is. However, while I do sometimes hold on to the year before like a security blanket, I do also get genuinely excited about the future. I am a planner and always have been. I started looking at colleges when I was a freshman in High School and I always order my textbooks the day they are listed on the bookstore website. For a planner like myself, New Years is full of opportunities to look forward to new and exciting adventures. No two years are ever the same, which is another concept that both thrills and terrifies me (but in a good way).

I also know that most people think resolutions are over-hyped and essentially just a tool used by fitness equipment marketers to trap people who, every year, just “really want to lose 5 pounds”. Nonetheless, I do think that striving to improve yourself is never a bad thing. New Years has always given me that kick I need to get started. Rather than make weak, vague resolutions though, I am trying to make specific and achievable goals for this new year.

  1. Show Gratitude each day – while I have grown up and learned a lot about what it means to be thankful, I do sometimes slip and find myself angry or upset over trivial things. This year, a focus on a mind shift would definitely be beneficial.
  2. Focus on a Healthy Lifestyle – This goal is pretty vague, but I could do a whole extra post on my fitness goals for this year. Some of them include drinking more water and drinking fewer margaritas.
  3. Blog bi-weekly – I recently finished reading Stephen King’s On Writing (a must-read for anyone who loves to create) and it completely changed the way I thought about my writing process. For me, writing was sporadic, and only when inspiration struck me. King’s main piece of advice is that to be a good writer you need to read and write, a lot. Obviously, this is common knowledge, but I had never thought about just sitting down without inspiration and starting to type to find inspiration. I would like to carve out time each week to write more, and hopefully, keep the blog updated.
  4. Read 30 books this year – this goes hand in hand with the goal above. If you’d like to see what I’m reading, you can friend me on Goodreads here.
  5. Work on Flexibility – Through yoga and actually stretching after my workouts.
  6. Live in the present – Again, this one is pretty vague. I get worried over things far off in the future so often that I forget to focus on what is happening now. This year, I aim to catch myself when I start to drift away from what I’m currently doing and thinking about something I can’t control, and actively bring myself back to the moment.
