So today I decided to do my first tag that I saw on another blog, to share a bit more about my passion and love of makeup, and to let my readers get to know me better! I tag anyone with their own blog to do this one, too!
How old were you when you started wearing makeup?
I started wearing my mom’s mascara when I was probably about 13 or 14. At around 15 and 16 I started to do the basic foundation, eyeliner, mascara look, but my hobby and love for makeup truly started around when I was around 17, nearly 18. And from there the passion has only grown!
How did you get into makeup?
I went through a period, like many teenagers, of self discovery. I tried fitting the ‘pretty girl’ mold by trying to mimic my makeup, actions and fashions on one of my friends who I felt embodied what I wanted to be most. As I grew up and became my own person, I discovered how I liked to look, and subsequently how I liked my makeup to look. I learned everything I know from scouring every corner of the internet for makeup videos on youtube, and blogs. I found the makeup tutorials so soothing to watch (I’m strange) and sometime so satisfying about perfectly, flawlessly applied makeup.
What are some of your favourite brands?
Too Faced, Urban Decay, L’Oreal, Covergirl, Maybelline, and Colour Pop just to name a few! There are still so many more to try!
What does makeup mean to you?
Makeup to me is my art for and a platform for me to experiment and create, on the canvas of my face!
If you could only wear 4 products on your face what would they be?
Liquid eyeliner, Eyeshadow, mascara and foundation.
What’s your favourite thing about makeup?
I was never a very creative or artistic person before I go into makeup. My favorite thing about it is that it has become my own personal art form, and a platform which I can express myself. I also just genuinely enjoy taking the time to sit down and put detail into my makeup, watching myself transform. There are so many things I love about makeup I could probably write a novel.
What do you think about drugstore makeup vs. high end makeup?
I think that it’s the prestige and the reputation of high end products which makes people think that they are better quality than drugstore makeup. I will say that there is sometimes the case where the more money, the better the product, which I have found mostly with eyeshadows. Higher end products in the eyeshadow department I have found to be much more pigmented and less chunky or prone to fallout than some at the drugstore. That being said, some of my all time favourite foundations come from the drugstore and surpass my high end products sometimes up to 3 times the price. Overall, I think you can work with whatever products are in your budget as long as you have knowledge on what you like and what you are looking for in a product. Reading reviews and recommendations is very helpful in this case.
What is one tip of advice you can give to a beginner?
Don’t let anyone tell you how to do your makeup. If you like bright eyeshadows, pile them on. If you want to rock a strong winged liner 24/7, do it! Makeup is such a personal thing and finding out what makes you feel comfortable and beautiful is a very freeing feeling.
What’s one makeup trend you never understood?
Coloured or covered-over eyebrows on the runway. Just not for me!
What do you think about the beauty community on YouTube
I love it. I know that I learned and truly began to love makeup because of watching youtube videos, and I’m overjoyed that there is a community of people with the ability to share their passion with others, and maybe help that self-conscious 16 year old girl find her own style!
Link me your own Makeup Story tags below! I’d love to see them!
